Game 5 WAS@MIA
March 31, 2020
WAS 000 000 110 -- 2 5 0
MIA 010 002 00x -- 3 5 2
W: Alacantara
L: Strasburg (1-1)
S: Steckenrider
HR: Aguilar , Eaton (2)
SB: Robles (3)
What was once a 3-0 record is now 3-2 with the Nats in third place behind the 4-1(!) Marlins and the hated Phillies. Three more times on base for the unstoppable Eric Thames was not enough as the Nats matched their record with tonight's 3-2 loss in Miami with their ace Sandy Alcantara earning the win with seven shutout innings.
A mere two or three inches decided the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Nats, already down 1-0, almost executed a beautiful inning-ending double play that was not to be. Following a walk to open the sixth, Corey Dickerson's bunt attempt trickled four feet from home plate and stopped. Catcher Yan Gomes alertly pounced on the ball and fired a perfect strike to shortstop Trea Turner for the out there. Turner's throw, impeded by Rojas' slide sailed high forcing Thames to come off the bag for the exact instant Dickerson reached the base to extend the inning. One hanging curveball to Aguilar later, and the lead was 3-0, ruining a second strong outing for Strasburg who allowed nine baserunners in his six innings featuring 10 strikeouts.
Aside from Thames' improbable continued dominance with two walks and a single, the rest of the lineup produced little with bottom half of the lineup reaching base only once (an RBI pinch-hit single by Zim in the eighth for an unearned run) in 16 anemic plate appearances. Adam Eaton returned to the lineup and got a couple of hits including his second home run to bring the score to 3-2 in the eighth. Eaton brought his average up to .200 with those two hits.
With a 1-2-3 ninth, Drew Steckenrider sent the Marlins fans home happy--not only because (judging by the size of the crowd at Marlins Park) they would have no trouble getting out of the parking lot.
